Interesting
Okay, not to defend Gotham War or anything, but I think I'm talking myself into liking what I see it's trying to do. Starting with some great tags on this post:
#i get why people are hating on it i really really do. trust me#but TO BE FAIR... zdarsky has been making it overwhelmingly clear that bruce is SERIOUSLY unwell right now#like it's been nonstop Horrors for him for like. over a dozen issues straight. with no rest or time to process. and he doesn't have alfred#who was a HUGE part of his support system not to mention the finances etc etc#iirc there's even a panel that pretty much outright states that this is more of an issue of control than morality#and that includes the choosing sides thing like the batkids seem more concerned w how bruce is going off the fucking rails than#just the moral aspects#anyway (via @clownprince)
#Batman#Bruce Wayne#REAL#REAL REAL REAL#LIKE. Zur En Arrh is a LITERAL Defense Mechanism going Malignant at this point#Not only that but throughout Zdarsky's run there's been allusions to illnesses and Bruce Not Having A Good Time#Not Having a Good Time and Not Having Time At All to take stock of the sheer What The Fuck-ery that's been going on recently#Because it's been a CONSTANT steam of What The Fuck-ery nonstop#And the Worse is yet to come if one considers the future issues synopsis and the ''I am a Gun'' story by Zdarsky#(At most I'm a little bit concerned over how Zdarsky will try to wrap this up‚ but that's a normal concern especially about Comics)#(Especially Batman Comics considering how often Editorial likes to... do things) (via @kaosvrow)
I agree with so much of the criticism of Gotham War, especially that the arguments for or against Selina's plans are absolute garbage by characters who should be making better arguments and that the other characters are being used as bobbleheads instead of actually giving them their canon personalities--and, okay, I will also point out that in the VERY FIRST ISSUE, Selina's plan gets someone killed and so I'm willing to extend some grace that the story isn't trying to push forward that either way is actually right, I honestly don't think it's about that. I think it's a story about Bruce Wayne's mental state, because Zdarsky's been building this up for awhile now, like the issue immediately prior to Knight Terrors? Shows us Bruce's mental state is ALREADY absolute TRASH right then:
Tumblr media
Zur-En-Arrh was already leaking through the seams of his mind, he was already feeling the impending doom of everything he cared about being burned away, that his mind literally couldn't watch his kids being happy and together and getting along without feeling like it was all burning to ash.
And then Knight Terrors happened, which was one more thing digging hard, boney fingers into his trauma, and he handled it pretty well in the moment, but it's such a giant, non-stop pile of stress on a mind that is already damaged to hell and back because of his trauma.
Further, the very first issue of the Gotham War storyline? The very first panel, the one that sets up the stage of what's going to happen, makes a very clear point about how this is about Bruce fracturing:
Tumblr media
And then on the very next page, Zur-En-Arrh is literally stalking at the bars of the cage around Bruce's mind.
Tumblr media
And then Bruce wakes up and it's immediately more establishing just how worried everyone is about him because so much has been piled on lately:
Tumblr media
Bruce hides his missing hand from his family, just like he's trying to hide how scraped thin he is right now, and goes out on patrol.
Where his internal monologue is all about how defensive he feels lately, how he feels like the years are catching up to him, how nothing feels right but this, making it clear that Bruce is hanging onto Batman with a death grip because it's the only thing that feels stable to him right now.
Tumblr media
And all of this is in the first TEN PAGES of the first issue, this is our set-up, this is our foundation, this is what we're being given to understand what this story is about. Then Batman #137 happens and it's literally ALL ABOUT BRUCE'S MENTAL SPACE, that Selina's plan is the catalyst, not the driving point behind all of it. Again, I'm in 100% agreement that the Batkids are acting like cardboard cutouts because you will never get me to believe that they didn't notice crime going down or that they wouldn't be pointing out that Gotham's wealthy are just going to start making their security lethal in response or that the Court of Owls won't step in, that this is not a long term solution to giving these people lives beyond crime, or even that a lot of them should be agreeing with Bruce, that they don't get to decide who is an acceptable victim. But the story isn't really about changing up the way comics deal with crime, it's about even the Batkids are framing it in terms of how it's about Bruce. Jason is really the only one who seems onboard with trying out Selina's plan, but even his confrontation with Bruce isn't really about that, it's about all their baggage, their fight immediately becomes about how angry Jason is at the way Bruce has treated him. This fight isn't happening because Jason's a true believer in Selina's plan, it's happening because he's angry at Bruce and Bruce is in a shitty mental place, after all the non-stop horrors AND feeling like he's been betrayed by the kids who he thought understood that people being victims wasn't acceptable, and so he lashes out at Jason.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When they fight, it's not because they're siding against Bruce, it's because he's become unstable and dangerous. The why of it doesn't matter, it's not about that.
(And I'm actually okay with the way that fight happened because I can buy that, for example, Cass might be holding back against him, she's a stronger fighter than he is, but he's being ruthless because of the state he's in, while she might be feeling more cautious.) When they fight, it's not because they're siding against Bruce, it's because he's become unstable and dangerous. The why of it doesn't matter, it's not about that. Even further, when Bruce fights against his kids, he's wrong and biased, especially in the fight with Dick, who he thinks has a sloppy offensive and doesn't know darkness like he does--to which Dick just immediately cracks him in the face because, yeah, Dick Grayson does know darkness and Bruce isn't as untouchable as he's trying to make himself seem (because being Batman is all he has right now).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think it's important that it's Dick who defies his expectations here, because this story is building off context of what happened between Selina and Bruce, that they were truly together for awhile, they were about to get married--Selina mentions that it the first issue, it's a major thorn in that conversation when she throws out how she doesn't believe that Gotham needs Batman anymore, it needs her.
She's giving him what he said he always wanted, she's giving him the thing that kept them apart, he should be happy, should they head to the church now? Saying that he won't because he wants to be Batman more than he wants to solve the city's problems.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The failed wedding between them is important in part because of what Selina's saying here, illustrating that both of them are bringing a lot of baggage to the table but also because of what else happened during that storyline, why the context is so important. Because that storyline dovetailed into one about Bane wanting to take over Gotham and he needed Batman unstable and distracted, which was working after Selina left him at the altar, he was a mess. But you know what was saving him at the time, bringing him back from the ledge? THIS KID:
Tumblr media
Dick was the one poking and prodding at Bruce with jokes and warmth and care and it was working. He actually got Bruce to cry in front of him, to release some actual genuine emotion!
Tumblr media
Dick makes Bruce more emotionally stable, to the point that Bane had to hire KGBeast to shoot Dick in the head just because he was so good at stabilizing Bruce--this is also why Dick's the one who says he'll go talk Bruce down off his moral ledge in Batman #137.
So, it's Dick that has to be the one to defy his expectations in the fight, has to be the one who breaks through Bruce's offense and knocks him down in what feels like a betrayal even when it isn't, because this isn't a story about who's right and who's wrong, it's a story about Bruce isolating himself because he's mentally fractured to hell and back, because he's not trusting his kids, he's still hurt by Selina leaving him, he's still grieving Alfred's death, he's run ragged physically and emotionally and mentally by a series of exhausting horrors piled on him, he's lost his family's fortune, he's not even living in his own family home anymore. (I focus on Dick here as an illustration of tying this back to previous examples of Bruce crumbling and important context that the storyline is drawing on, but Gotham War isn't really specifically about Bruce and Dick's relationship, but more about Bruce's relationship with all his kids, like Tim and Jason and Damian all have equally important moments. But it's a very direct example of how his children are a huge part of his support system and draw him back from the ledge of being just Batman and back into being Bruce.) That's why the issue ends with Bruce getting the papers telling him that the bank sold Wayne Manor to Vandal Savage, because it's one more thing that's stripping Bruce Wayne away from the character, and leaving him with nothing but Batman and Zur-En-Arrh. Gotham War isn't actually a story about a war for Gotham. It's a story about Bruce Wayne going out of control and everything is written to serve that. The characters' fights are catalyzed by Selina's plans, but they quickly become about Bruce's relationship with the characters. The narrative makes heavy-handed points about Bruce feeling like he's losing his grip, that he's hallucinating and talking to himself, that he is extremely mentally unwell right now. Everything Zdarsky's been writing (like especially the "I Am a Gun" storyline right before Knight Terrors) has been building up to fracturing Bruce Wayne.

Y/n L/n talks Catwoman, DC, and new interests
by Young Hollywood
Interviewer: Hello Readers! Today I am joined by one of these most known young actresses of our generation, Y/n L/n! Thank you for being here.
Y/n: Thank you for inviting me. I love doing interviews.
Interviewer: So, how have you been?
Y/n: I've been good. Doing a lot of filming for Batman, catching up with old friends, trying to up my instagram game. I've gotten into videography, shooting mini vlogs and cooking videos.
Interviewer: Sounds fun! I love that! Is there any insight into the movie that you can give us?
Y/n: Sure! If any of you were wondering, this is going to be very different from any portrayal of Batman and Catwoman that you've seen or read. Obviously because Selina Kyle is a lot younger than Bruce in this adaptation which is a plot within itself. This Selina, and because she is younger, her story has changed, is a street rat or stray cat. She lives on the streets, and her story in this, is similar to that of her portrayal in the show, Gotham. She meets Bruce as she is trying pickpocket off him out in the open. Then, it goes from there.
Interviewer: Wow! That certainly is a must-watch. Now, I hate to get deep all of a sudden, but have you seen the comments regarding your casting?
Y/n: Yes, I have actually. A lot of them are for disgusting middle-aged men, so I don't really bother with them. I knew what I was getting into when I auditioned.
Interviews: You also get to work with Matt Smith again. Did you know that he was casted as Bruce or did you find out after you got the call?
Y/n: You know what's funny? Zack told me that Matt told him not to tell me. So, I didn't know until our table read!
Interviewer: Oh my god! What?!
Y/n: Yeah! And I hadn't seen him in so long that I almost jumped across the table to hug him.
Interviews: Aw!
Y/n: A lot of people also would say that they felt bad for me because I'm the love interest to someone twice my age, but I've known Matt for a long time. He worked with my father in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. I played young Rhaena in House of the Dragon. He's a family friend, a beloved friend. I trust him.
Y/n: I understand the public's concerns though. I did just turn 24 earlier this year. The age gap is big, but it is strictly for storytelling purposes.
Interviews: There you have it. I loved talking with you today.
Y/n: I always look forward to interviews with you. Big fan.
Interviewer: Big fan of you too! Any last words?
Y/n: Go see Batman in theaters near you coming this December!
fin.
I tried my best.

"Oh my god he got another one."
by LakeAwen By the time Cass comes around, the Batfamily is starting to notice a pattern. Every time they mention wanting another sibling, a kid shows up within the month just *needing* to be adopted. Coincidence? Or CURSE? This is Gotham, after all. je ne sais quoi
hey guys, girls, and gays. thanks.
part one, part two, part three, part four, part five, part six, part seven, part eight, part nine , part ten, part eleven, part twelve, part thirteen, part fourteen , part fifteen, part sixteen, part seventeen, part eighteen, part nineteen
"Fuckin' stupid, putting it this high up, this is an accident waiting to happen," You mutter under your breath, fingers just grazing the bag of cat food on the top shelf. You step up on your tip toes, the shelf gets no closer. Stepping up onto the shelf helps, giving you another 3 inches, and you grab a corner of the bag, letting out a triumphant noise.
"Gotcha!" 3 inches too many, it seems, as it all gives way and you crash back to the floor, eighteen pound bag of cat food clutched tightly to your chest. You're staring into the fluorescent lights when a sharply manicured hand pops into view.
"Need a hand? I saw your valiant struggle against that dastardly-placed food."
You lift your head and look up. An extremely attractive woman with looks down at you and smiles, her brown eyes crinkling at the corners. You shift the food to the floor beside you and take her hand. "Uh yea, thanks. God, that's embarrassing that you saw that. I would've preferred to have been crushed under the food, actually."
She laughs. She laughs? Your brain short-circuits. "Well, you recover nicely, I'll give you that. What's the name that would've been on the obituary?" You giver her your name as you stare at her with wide eyes. Damn, she's good. She nods as though thinking about it. "Selina Kyle. And here, if you ever find yourself trapped under some cat food, and you can move your arms, give a ring, and I'll come over to dig you out. And hey, if you're not too beat-up after that, maybe we could grab dinner."
She hands you a slip of paper with her name and phone number, gives you a wink, and waltzes down the aisle. You stand there for three uninterrupted minutes before you haul the bag of food off of the floor and start calling Alfred's name.
*
"-and then she gave me her number, unprompted, isn't that fucking crazy?" you ask, shoving the piece of paper in Bruce's face. You'd put away your pet store findings once you'd gotten home and had gone to find him, finding all of this very funny, if baffling. You'd found him reading in the library, book now closed on the arm of his chair.
Bruce takes it, and turns it over carefully. You immediately backpedal. "I mean, I wasn't gonna call her, obviously, what we have is too important to me, and it's going so well, but this has never happened to me before, and I-"
"Selina Kyle is one if my exes. And she knows I'm Batman."
You deflate. "Oh."
Bruce catches the spiral you're going on. "That's not to say she didn't truly find you attractive, that's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is that it brings up memories for me. Particularly painful ones. Selina and I, we have an incredibly complicated history, one that almost ended in marriage, if only-"
You kneel in front of him and cup his face with your hands. "You don't have to tell me anything you don't want to. Or, even if you want to, but can't right now. I'm in it for the long haul, remember?"
Bruce simply nods and rubs your hand with his own, pressing a kiss to your palm. "Another time, then."
*
Batman stands on a ledge, surveying the city. The night is quiet, surprisingly, given how warm the weather's been. So quiet, that she couldn't hide the taps of her heels if she wanted to.
"Going silent for a bit," Bruce says into his ear piece, then switches it off and turns around. "What do you want, Selina?"
"Oh, can't a girl just enjoy a night out on the town, Batman? Not all of us have such fulfilling careers," she replies, slinking into view from around the door to the roof. "Or relationships, for that matter."
"Did you know from the beginning?" His eye twitches underneath the mask.
"Honest to god, I didn't. I genuinely thought I was just playing the field, until I saw Alfred as I was leaving. That and Harley showed me some tabloids that weren't afraid of getting sued. I gotta say, this is pretty underwhelming, for you. Not a cape, not a villain, hell, not even somebody remotely famous. I'm impressed, I-"
"Don't talk about them like that. This is different. This is-" His hands are tightening under the cape. A master of his own mind and emotions it seems, until it comes to you.
Selina holds up her hands in surrender and smiles coyly. "Relax, B. I'm just here to tell you I'm not stepping into your territory. I'm not stupid enough to try and take something that's yours again." She pulls out a grappling gun and shoots it off into the night. "Just let me know when you're done, 'kay? I wanna take a turn."
She's gone before Bruce can formulate a reply. He switches his comm back on, and starts making plans.
*
You've been out at the pool entirely too long, Bruce thinks. Like a cat laying in their favorite window, as soon as it had become warm enough, you were out in the gardens, at the pool. You always told him that given the opportunity, you would stay out there all day, but he hadn't quite believed it until it became an inconvenience to his plans. You've been out there for seven hours now, and likely for longer, now that Dick, Steph, Duke, and Jason have joined you.
"Sir, if I may suggest going to them, instead of waiting for them to come to you?" Alfred asks, hands perfectly poised behind his back.
Bruce pinches the bridge of his nose. "Thank you, Alfred."
He simply nods. "Will there be anything else, sir?"
"Depends on how this goes. I'll let you know."
"Quite good, sir."
Bruce makes his way down to the pool, and walks up just in time to see you break the surface in the deep end, much like a polar bear in their enclosure at the zoo. Jason, Steph, Duke, and Dick have a volleyball game going in the shallow end, while Titus lays in the pavement and watches. His heart clenches when you catch his eye.
"Babe, hey! Are you finally gonna join us? The water's great! Steph says it's too cold, but here she is, right? Of course, Tim told us to drop dead when we invited him, but I think that's just because he's too skinny to appreciate how refreshing this cool water is." You swim up to the edge, smiling wide. His other children snicker.
Bruce kneels down by the edge. "Actually, I came to ask you something, would you mind coming up for a second?"
You note the way his smile falters for a millisecond, and how he tightens his hands. He's nervous. Anything that can make the Bat nervous warrants your full attention, you suppose. "Oh, uh, sure, one sec."
You climb up out of the water, and Bruce thinks you look radiant with the late afternoon sun behind you. You join him on the lounge chairs, toweling yourself off carefully. Bruce has never felt anxious until this moment right here. "Okay, big man, shoot."
Bruce clears his throat. "Right. Yes. So, I've been thinking. About our relationship, specifically, and how much it has changed me. Changed us, for the better. I never thought that something like this, given my line of work, would ever be possible, but you seem to have proven me wrong, and gone against every calculation I could have had for our relationship to play out. And it has been the greatest thing to behold, really. I want to deepen our commitment. I want us to commit to each other, despite our problems." Bruce pulls a small box out of his pocket, and flips it open. Sitting in the center are two rings, both with a silver band, but one with a ring of some crushed blue stone inlaid, and another with your favorite color instead of blue. He says your name like it's the first time he's ever said it before. "I love you, will you marry me?"
You immediately stand up, going, "Are you fucking sure?"
His children stare at him in shock, while Alfred simply walks down the pathway, champagne and sparkling grape juice in hand. Bruce's eyebrows start to draw in, and you speak quickly. "Shut up, shut up! I know you're sure, I'm sorry, I don't know why I said that, yes! I meant to say yes, sure, whatever! I just, I don't, I've never-"
Bruce shoots up and kisses you. There are stars behind your eyes as you comprehend what's just happened to you, what's going to happen to you, and all you can think about is that you're soaking the front of his shirt right now. Bruce must not realize he's losing himself a little bit, because just as he swipes his tongue across your bottom lip, Dick whistles. The two of you spring apart, Bruce combing a hand through his hair in embarrassment, and you burying your face in your towel. Alfred is already passing flutes of champagne around, and Tim and Damian are tearing down the pathway.
"Father, how could you!" "Bruce, holy fuck!"
Bruce just smiles wider than you've ever seen in your life as he pries your left hand away from the towel, and slips the blue ring onto your finger. Looks just like his eyes, you think as you stare in awe.
The sun starts to dip beneath the horizon as you kiss him again, then slip his ring onto his hand. The thought of announcing it to the press, and having to go out into public with him officially makes you nauseous, but that's a freakout for another time. For now, you kiss your fiancé, then throw down to towel and jump back into the pool to cool your heated face. Everybody yells their indignation, but you just hug yourself at the bottom of the pool, incredulous.

I understand that "Bruce Wayne is dating Batman and is his sugar daddy" has been something of a pet online theory for a while now, but I canNOT with this man. People who don't follow Gotham/celebrity/Gotham celebrity news may not be aware, but Brucie "Babygirl" Wayne has the world's worst poker face.
So some reporter finally did it. They asked Bruce Wayne to his face if he was dating Batman.
Y'all, I have watched the interview repeatedly. Bruce winked no less than 27 times in 7 minutes and 36 seconds. He made 8 sex jokes, at least one of which involved bats (somehow???? Did you know that there's a kind of bat called the long-fingered bat? Bruce Wayne did and now I do too! 🙃). He chuckled. He giggled. This man chortled when asked if he knew what was under the Batsuit. And then he made another sex joke.
For everyone who's like "I thought he was dating Selina Kyle?" or "Wasn't he with that one dorky Metropolis reporter?" this reporter covered that too! Because she asked, and Bruce had the audacity (affectionate) to say he was "willing to be shared, if he found the right people to share with" so like! Okay then! (For those wondering, yes he DID wink at the camera after that line.)
Bruce Wayne has all but confirmed that he and Batman are dating and getting down and dirty on the reg. And like, good for him, but my dude, you already get kidnapped like every three weeks. Didn't your boyfriend warn you not to give people MORE fodder for kidnap attempts?
UPDATE: HE GOT WORSE, I'M SCREAMING, I CAN'T WITH THIS MAN.
He DID get kidnapped again after this interview.
He held a press conference after getting rescued (by Nightwing, not even by his boyfriend smh). Mr. Gotham's Charisma himself read directly off a note card without looking up once, with the world's most wooden delivery, and he said, verbatim (and I'll remind you, with pretty much zero inflection):
"I regret the insinuations I made during last Thursday's interview. They were false. I am not dating Batman, nor do I know his secret identity. I have no connection to Batman or any of his associates."
And then the last fucking thing he did was look right into the nearest lens and fucking wink at the camera, oh my god.
So like. Good job on the convincing performance of your 100% not scripted speech there, Brucie. /s
@ batman come get your bf before he just like proposes to you on live TV or something

Do you have any Huntress/Helena Bertinelli issue or comic run recs? 👉👈 you have infected me with helena brainrot (positive)
So There are a two ways I can answer this question, the way i did previously with just the comics I'd recommend to get started or a full timeline for her- This time ill go with the full timeline. If you just wanna dip your metaphorical toes in the water check out this post, if you want to read her story from start to finish this is the post for you.
FIRST SOME CONTEXT ON HELENA BERTINELLI'S CHARACTER CREATION. Pre Crisis on Infinite Earth's there was a character known as Helena Wayne, she was the daughter of Earth Two's Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle and was The Huntress. She was fairly popular but the whole uhh massive crisis event erased her from continuity. The problem was people still wanted Huntress she was a recognizable name and also just people liked her so Helena Bertinelli was created. Despite sharing a first name and a superhero name Helena B and Helena W are INCREDIBLY different characters in personality and just.. in like every conceivable way. Alrighty now lets get started, Helena Bertinelli makes her first ever appearance in The Huntress(1989) I really like this comic run. It's pretty intense dealing with both CSA as well as SA but i think it does it pretty respectfully and well. Overall I really like this comic, that being said the art is a bit... rough, so i understand not wanting to read it. The Huntress(1989) 'era' of Helena ends with Justice League International Special 2, which btw if anyone has an actual good scan of this please let me know because my scan is ASS Then we got Detective comics #652-653 which has Helena's new costume and a team up with B-Man himself. Now its time for Robin III: Cry Of the Huntress- This is the first Helena and Tim team up!! I love them so much they r so silly so I consider this book required reading, also Helena has an awful mullet it's amazing Helena also has another story with Tim around this time in Benedictions which is a three part story in Dc Showcase 1994 # 5, Robin(1993) #6 , Showcase #6. Azrael is also running around as Batman during this so thats fun and quirky(i like azbat okay)
Next is Dixon's Helena with Huntress(1994) ERMM this is a comic that exists. It has some panels I like but i don't think its required reading it's uhh... Dixon!! and WOagh no wayyy another tim team up its almost like they are siblings bffs 5ever this is crazy Detective Comics #685-686 and Robin #17 also sidenote i like Lynx's 90's design a lot sighh Next is a string of complicated and long story lines. With Batman Contagion, Batman Legacy, Batman Catacylsm, and Batman No Man's Land. Also she gets her best outfit here yayyy :). Now parsing through all this stuff I don't really care that much about Batman: Legacy and I'm not gonna lie to you and say I've read Contagion in it's entirety because I haven't. Just know that Gotham gets hit by a mutated ebola virus and it sucks and is bad for everybody sjdkfbasdkg. Also again cool new Helena outfit top ten epic moments. Before all the No Man's Land stuff there is Birds Of Prey: ManHunt and Nightwing/Huntress. I do not like the latter and have no strong opinion on the former other than it's the start of a long line of Babs treating Helena like shit. ManHunt does have Dinah and Helena interactions though so :) yippeee Almost forgot this but Read Detective Comics #703 its a really cute Helena and Tim story read it right now thank you XOXOOXO I consider Cataclysm and No Man's Land, No Man's Land especially, CRITICAL HELENA READING. HELENA IS SO GOOD IN NML OH MY GOD. Cataclysm is kinda the set up to No Man's Land and also has a cool Helena/Steph teamup in Blunt Trauma. But No Man's Land is where the really juicy stuff is. I'm not really gonna say what specific issues Helena shows up in because you should really read all of or most of No Man's Land as its not only an important Helena story but THE MOST IMPORTANT Gotham story(in modern times anyway). I read the 5 trades but I've heard good things about the Omnibus as well. If you need further help with No Mans Land and how to read it just shoot me an ask or smth. READ NO MAN'S LAND Okay now after NML Huntres Joins the Justice Leauge of America in JLA #16. I have not read all of Helena's JLA stuff so i cant really comment on it I'm a failure sorry... NOW FOR THE RUCKA STUFF GREG RUCKA LOVE OF MY LIFE!!!!! So First check out Batman Chronicles #15, it's not all Helena but it does have a Helena story which is her first meeting with The Question so erm go read that !!! Now time for one of my fave huntress stories, Batman/Huntress: Cry For Blood. THIS STORY IS SO FUCKING GOOD. It does retcon Helena's previous backstory which i have mixed opinions on but the new backstory is far from bad and also its just soosososo good i love greg rucka so much go read it right fucking now. Now I have bad news for you gamers. We have the Hush storyline wherein Jim Lee introduced the dreaded Helena Ab Window. Hush is generally pretty good but that outfit is uhhh an outfit!! she starts showing up in Batman #609 Generally speaking I do like this storyline so I would recommend the whole thing. Helena regularly starts appearing as a main character in Birds Of Prey at issue 56. Birds Of Prey IS a mixed bag but most of Helena's appearances from here on are in there so... Be prepared for a healthy dose of sexism though. Outside of BOP check out The Question: Pipelines which is a story in Detective Comics 854-864 written by love of my life Rucka of course. Helena is not in the whole thing but its a good story and her and Renee are a great Duo so I recommend it. While your out it also check out both issues of The Question: Convergence. Also written by Rucka and featuring Helena, its good :). Now I did leave some shit out like Battle for the Cowl but thats because I dont like battle for the cowl and also I don't think Helena is very central in those stories so TA DAA here is my list enjoy anon sorry for any spelling errors Tutorial on how i read comics safely

Selina Kyle
nOPE | no | hmmm | idk | sure | ye | yES | OH MY GOD YES
She's great in most of what I've read with her. I unfortunately haven't gotten around to reading her solos but I want to (well... there's some runs I'm dreading but will probably read anyways).
only reason she isn't higher is due to a few writers and some fans' reactions to a certain other character... the second thing wouldn't bug me as much if the first thing didn't exist...
also she's the batman rogue with the most backstories I'm pretty sure. she's got like 4-5 of them.

Reasons to love The Batman (2022)
Like always, MASSIVE SPOILER WARNING!!!!  Seriously, if you ain’t seen the movie yet DO NOT READ THIS unless you just don’t care about getting spoiled.  Seriously, I warned you ...
...
...
...
Incredibly creepy POV opening, that is a BOLD WAY to start the movie.
This may actually be the most no-holds-barred, unflinching PG-13 I’ve ever seen.  Seriously, how is this NOT soft-R-rating territory?  I’m not complaining, I was HOPING they weren’t gonna pull their punches with this one.  Just saying ...
Michael Giacchino’s score is MOODY.  After Elfman’s super-Gothic and Zimmer’s pure epic this is a good choice.
Reeves’ take on Gotham is a genuinely terrifying place.  The DC universe’s darkest and most dangerous city has never been a more wretched hive of scum and villainy ...
Perhaps my favourite thing about this whole movie is the fact that FINALLY we’re getting to see Batman being The Dark Knight DETECTIVE on the big screen.  I mean yeah, there’s still some great action, but he’s finally proper SLEUTHING THIS SHIT ...
Also this Batman is still a really badass fighter, but he’s not a FLAWLESS fighter.  He’s still pretty raw, and he still takes a few licks himself.  That’s just so much more REAL.
Best Batcave EVER.  Seriously ...
Andy Serkis Alfred is so DONE with Bruce’s shit already.  I love it.  And the way they referenced his younger days as a special forces operative and MI6 spook just SENT ME.
Pattinson is FINALLY free of that Edward Cullen baggage.  He put that sparkly bastard to bed.  He’s amazing.
For the first time since the Tim Burton movies, they’re genuinely properly exploring the PSYCHOLOGY of what made Bruce become the Batman.  Our boy is a mental and emotional DUMPSTER FIRE and I wouldn’t change him for the world.
Zoe Kravitz OH MY GOD.  I am IN LOVE.  Selina Kyle has always been my very favourite DC antihero, and Zoe gives THE BEST, most thoroughly faithful take on Catwoman EVER.  They even gave her the right haircut.  That means so much to me.
The Bat / Cat dynamic is played to absolute PERFECTION.
Jeffrey Wright’s Jim Gordon is amazing.  I mean Gary Oldman is the man but Jeff just NAILED HIM.
Selina’s contact-lens-spycam sequence is fantastic.  I can’t believe how tense it is considering it’s not actually technically an action scene ...
The way all the Batman gear is so well realised, it thoroughly convinces as something that an admittedly ingenious reclusive billionaire and his similarly talented butler could have cobbled together themselves.
Seriously though, the Batsuit, the gadgets, and most of all THE BATMOBILE.  It’s a fucking souped-up NASCAR hotrod and it actually DRIVES like one, too.  There’s no finesse to any of this stuff, it’s pure function and I love it.
Also that nighttime freeway chase in the pouring rain is AMAZING.  Definite strong candidate for action sequence of the year right there ...
Colin Farrell is unrecognisable as the Penguin.  He’s also acting his socks off.  He’s brilliant.  This Oswald Cobblepot is a pure lowlife thug with delusions of grandeur, that is just SPOT-ON.
The scene where Peter Sarsgaard’s corrupt DA is a walking bomb and Batman’s just having a conversation with the Riddler through him ... wow, just wow.  Genius scene.
“The Sins of the Father will be visited upon the son.” gave me goosebumps because I totally knew where that was going and it did not disappoint.  Glorious emotional fallout ...
Really though, the fact they went full-on HUSH with Paul Dano’s Riddler was the best way to go.  First time ever this guy is a genuine, credible, realistic THREAT to our Dark Knight on the big screen.  And yeah, Dano knocked it right out of the park ...
“He’s my father!”  The whole “Carmine Falconi is Selina’s FATHER” part was like “Wow, they really went there, sweet.”  It made me really happy.
That corridor fight lit only by muzzle flashes.  OH MY GOD ...
Batman and Riddler meet for real in Arkham Asylum.  More gooesbumps.
How they made the whole case hinge on that tiny little detail with the carpet tool was perfect.  Just like a true classic murder myrstery ...
... and then that reveal of the double-bluff.  Inspired.  I did not see that coming AT ALL.
On paper that could look like a somewhat disappointing anticlimax for a big action showdown.  The way they pulled it off, on the other hand, made it AWESOME.  Phenomenal way to do it.
And when Bruce finally, TRULY becomes the Batman, Gotham’s Dark Knight defender, it’s not through beating the bad guys, but by SAVING PEOPLE.  Perfection.
Wait ... is that who I think it is in that cell in Arkham?  Yeah, I’d recognise that laugh anywhere ...
That epilogue is so powerful.  Way to end it, guys.

Hi omg I love ur work🥺🥺 I was wondering if u could do Edward nashton meeting his old crush from the orphanage while he is riddler accidentally? Like they both wanna kill this guy and he realises who she is 🥺🥺💕💕 thank u
Oh my god, I love this idea! I’m afraid I got a little carried away and it ended up becoming a full on fic at this point but… hopefully you’ll enjoy!
Warnings for fluff, the first parts are literally the cutest thing I’ve written 💚 also for talk of death and murder but this is Eddie/Riddler we’re talking about so 😂 I apologise in advance for any OOC nonsense, it’s been a long few weeks for me 😭
Also, there aren’t any gender terms so I suppose this is a gender neutral reader but I’ll admit that while writing it, I was imagining myself (a woman) 😅 I imagine the reader later on in the story is a little like Selina Kyle because… well, you’ll see. Hopefully it’ll make sense in the story! But the reader doesn’t have a particular gender in this story so… yep! All genders can enjoy! ❤️

********
After the death of your parents, you were of course sent to the Gotham Orphanage. It was difficult enough losing both of your parents, let alone being forced to now live in what was quite possibly the most underfunded, dirty, cold orphanage in the world. To add, the adults in charge were unsympathetic, not caring that you were grieving your lost family, and the other kids were largely no better from what you could tell. You immediately hated it there, and you wished more than ever that you could go back to how things were before - you and your parents, happy and together.
There was soon one bright spot though.
You had seen the shy boy with glasses a few times around the orphanage, usually reading or working on some kind of puzzle; he didn’t appear to have any friends, and you’d even overheard some of the other kids make fun of him, but because they were older and bigger, you hadn’t been able to step in. He seemed so unlike the other children at the orphanage, you thought, and you wondered if it might be worth speaking to him - even if you only had one friend, it was bound to be less lonely than having none. It took a few weeks before you had the right opportunity to talk to him away from anyone else and also after settling into your new “home”, but eventually the right moment came.
It had been a chilly autumn day, and you saw him sitting outside under a tree away from the other children playing - you didn’t really want to play with any of the other kids, so you decided you’d speak to the shy boy, maybe ask what he was doing. You noticed that he looked surprised when you sat down opposite him, glancing around as if expecting you to be sitting with someone else, as if you were only sitting near him as a coincidence.
“Hi,” you greeted, somewhat awkwardly. “I’m (Y/N).”
The boy blinked and didn’t speak for a long moment, and you briefly wondered if he even could speak - perhaps he was mute or something. Just as you were debating apologising for disturbing him and leaving, you heard a quiet voice.
“I’m… I’m Edward.”
“Edward.” You repeated it, determined to remember it. “Umm… What are you reading, Edward?”
He looked down at his book and back, still perplexed that you were talking to him - it was obvious he was mostly ignored. “Oh, I’m not reading… Well, I suppose I am, but… It’s a riddle book actually.”
“Riddles? Like… Like a problem you solve?”
He couldn’t stop himself from smiling slightly to himself. “Sort of. They can be misleading or puzzling, and you have to be smart to solve them - that’s why I like them.”
“Huh. Can you try one on me?” You ask, your interest piqued.
“Oh.” He looked surprised by your question but still flipped open his book and searched for one hurriedly. “These are super easy ones, but… The less of me you have, the more one is worth; treat me with care as I will you, and both of us will share our time on earth. What am I?”
You wrinkled your nose up as your thought, which made him smile even more to himself; it took nearly a whole minute to consider what he’d said before you figured it out. “Is it… a friend?”
“Yes!” His eyes lit up behind his glasses, and you realised absentmindedly that he had green eyes. “Yes, it is a friend! You’re the only person who’s figured it out when I’ve asked them!”
For the first time since your parents had died, you felt yourself smile, almost wryly. “So… Are you asking me to be your friend?”
His mouth opened and closed very quickly. “I… umm… I…” It was clear that he was worried he’d offended you somehow. “I didn’t mean to… I mean, if- if you don’t want to be then… then that’s okay…”
You looked at this shy but intelligent boy in front of you, at his huge glasses and the way his cheeks had gone pink, and knew immediately what your answer would be. “Yes.”
“Y- Yes?” His eyes were even wider than ever, voice no louder than a disbelieving whisper.
You smiled and moved closer to him. “Yes, I want to be friends.”
****
Edward Nashton was not only your friend - he was your best friend, and you were his.
The two of you spent most of your time together, usually finding an empty room or quiet area of the orphanage to be alone in away from the other children, and you were practically inseparable. You did a lot of puzzles - not just riddles but also jigsaws, word problems, sudoku, even card games - together, and when you weren’t playing those, you’d sit and talk for hours. You’d never had a friend like Eddie, not even when your parents had been alive, and being around him made dealing with their loss so much easier.
It didn’t take long for you to trust Eddie or feel at ease with him, and you told him everything; you told him about your parents, about where you used to live, your old school, about how they died. He listened intently to everything, and you knew that he never forgot anything you told him - he was so smart, much smarter than a lot of the other kids in the city, and you knew he could memorise things easily, especially when it came to you.
You learnt that Eddie had lived at the orphanage ever since he could remember, that he could barely remember his own parents - and the small scraps that he did remember about his parents weren’t nearly as wonderful as what you knew about yours. You were understanding yet horrified when he recounted that he could remember his father hurting him and calling him “stupid”, and you told Edward that he was the smartest person you’d ever met - and it was the truth.
Neither of you were particularly liked by the other kids at the orphanage - mostly Edward was targeted by your peers, although you found that you also got teased and made fun of for standing up for him, for hanging around with him. You wouldn’t have had it any other way - Edward was your best friend, and that was that. You mostly ignored the others, knowing they weren’t worth your time.
But Edward got it much worse than you; he’d been there longer, and his intense love of puzzles and riddles singled him out. You saw the bruises on your friend from being pushed over, the way the frames of his glasses repeatedly got snapped, and even on one occasion you’d been the one who found him after the others had forced his head down a toilet. It made you so angry, so full of rage, that people could treat him like this - and that the orphanage staff did nothing to stop this. In fact, the staff didn’t even attempt to hide their dislike of Edward, ignoring the bullying even when it happened in front of them and even encouraging it at times.
You wanted nothing more than to hurt the people who hurt your best friend.
“They’re just jealous,” you told him firmly as you finished taping his glasses frame back together - thankfully, the lenses were intact still. “They’re all jealous because they know you’re ten times smarter than they ever will be, Eddie. You’re going to go on to do great things, you’re going to change this city, and they’re afraid of that - afraid of how powerful you’ll be.”
He sniffed, putting his glasses back on his face before looking at you with a hopeful stare. “You think so?”
You nodded emphatically. “I know so.”
He smiled weakly, allowing you to smooth down the collar of his shirt and help fix his hair; after a moment, he looked at you in an almost bashful way. “You… You called me Eddie.”
“Huh. I guess I did.” You met his eyes. “Is that okay? Can I call you that?”
“Absolutely,” Eddie breathed, and the way he looked at you made you feel somewhat funny inside. “I… I like you calling me that.”
“Good.” You beamed at him happily before taking his arm. “Come on, we’ve got time until the dinner bell - enough time for you to help me finish that crossword.”
****
It was official: Eddie had a crush on you, his best friend.
As you both hit adolescence, he started to realise it more and more; he had always liked you, obviously, as you were his best friend - but this was different. For a while, he’d passed off the intensity of it as just really caring about you because of your friendship, because neither of you had anyone else - you were the only good thing in his life. But as you both started to grow out of childhood, it became more and more obvious that what he was feeling wasn’t platonic at all.
It wasn’t platonic to feel a warm tingle whenever you touched his arm, he realized, nor that he had thoughts of wanting to embrace you, of holding your hand as you walked everywhere together. He noticed more and more that he was staring at your mouth and wondering what it would be like to kiss you, what you’d taste like, and even how you might react if he just kissed you randomly. Oh, and it definitely was not platonic to have dreams about you, especially not dreams that left his heart pounding and body tense.
Eddie had it bad for you, but he was scared of you finding out - scared not only that you’d reject him, but also that it would ruin your friendship completely and he’d then have no one anymore. He imagined scenarios of your possible reactions to finding out he had a crush on you, but he knew you’d never like him back, not like that - of course you wouldn’t, he thought miserably, because you were so amazing, so incredible, that why would you like him in that way?
He tucked away memories of certain moments in his mind, knowing that reliving them in his thoughts was the closest he’d ever get to actually being in a relationship with you; your beautiful eyes lighting up at the sight of him, a hand on his arm or shoulder, your laugh, the way you called him ‘Eddie’ so affectionately, how you stood up to those who bullied the two of you. It kept him going on even the worst days, and despite knowing he couldn’t tell you of his feelings, that it would most likely never happen, he was still so happy to just spend every day with you.
And then you were gone.
One day some distant relatives of yours came; they’d been overseas for the last several years and hadn’t realised your parents had died, that you’d been living in this rundown orphanage that no one in the city cared enough about to fix. You were overjoyed, not really to see them as you’d not really met them before but more so because it meant you’d get to leave this awful place, and once the staff of the orphanage were able to establish that they were indeed your relatives, you were going home with them.
It all happened very quickly; you were hurriedly made to pack your bag with the few belongings you had and rushed onwards without a backwards glance. As you approached the main door of the orphanage, however, you realised something.
“I need to say goodbye to Eddie,” You said, but when you attempted to turn around, one of the staff grabbed you by the arm and marched you forwards. “Wait, no, please, just let me say goodbye to him-!”
But none of them would listen, not even your relatives; you begged them for just five minutes so you could find your best friend, so you could give him a phone number or even an address to write to, but they refused - they wanted to get out of Gotham as soon as possible.
“He’s my best friend,” You pleaded desperately, on the verge of tears. “Please, I can’t leave without saying goodbye!”
But they merely told you that you’d make other friends in your new home, that soon enough you wouldn’t even remember this old friend of yours, and he’d probably forget you too. You cried hard as you were driven away, vowing to yourself that you’d find Eddie someday, you’d find a way to let him know where you were, that you’d see each other again one day.
Eddie had watched you disappear from the window of the boys’ room, and he’d cried; he cried because the staff hadn’t allowed him to come and say goodbye, because they’d locked him in this room so he couldn’t get out, but mostly because his heart was broken. His only friend - his best friend - was gone without so much as a goodbye, and he had no idea where you’d gone.
Why didn’t you say goodbye?, he thought, hurt by this fact: he cared so much about you, and he had hoped that you cared about him too, even if it was only as a friend. It was like you didn’t care about him, that it was all a lie - and it was like a knife to the gut.
As the days turned to weeks, and then to months and years, he waited for any sign that you cared about him, for a letter or some kind of communication. But nothing ever came. It was like you’d forgotten all about him.
He never forgot you though - never.
****
After your relatives died many years later, you used the money they had left you to return to Gotham; it was even more awful than you remembered due to the crime rate skyrocketing, and it was clear that the streets were run by criminals - and no one did a thing about it.
You went back to the orphanage, hoping to find some information on your old best friend - to find out what happened to him, to track him down - but it was abandoned save for a few dropheads hiding out there. There were no records left, no hints as to your old friend’s current whereabouts, and you found yourself crying when you got back to your new apartment in Gotham because you had no idea how you’d find him, no idea if he was even still in the city or where he might have gone.
Gotham was a big city - even if he was still there, your chances at finding him were slim. He had no social media that you could find, no records… you wondered if he was even alive anymore. You remembered how every winter, at least one of the babies had died in the orphanage, and the older kids soon became dropheads… what if that had happened to your Eddie? You couldn’t bear the thought of it.
You were so angry - so ridiculously, undeniably angry - at what that place had done to you and Eddie, what might have happened to him after you had been taken away. And as you spent longer and longer back in Gotham, this anger began to rise: you were realizing more than ever that the people who ran this city were corrupt, that they were in fact the same people responsible for the miserable childhood you and your best friend had endured. Just as during your childhood, no one did anything to help in this city - everyone just let it happen. The closest anyone had to justice was a damn masked vigilante running around dressed like a bat, and that wasn’t really helping much in terms of changing the overall corruption of the city.
Someone needed to do something - and if that had to be you, then so be it.
****
No one knew who the Riddler was - exactly how he wanted it.
Edward Nashton had built this persona carefully, had spent months plotting and planning things before they were put into motion. He had made sure everything was perfect: the coat one of his favourite shades of dark green, the mask hid everything but his eyes, it was comfortable and not too loose whilst allowing him to wear his glasses. There was no chance of leaving any of his DNA behind; his gloves were thick but didn’t leave fibres behind, he knew how to meticulously wrap his head in clingwrap before donning his mask so that there was no chance of hairs being left behind. Every inch of him was covered, even his mouth, and it would be impossible for the GCPD or anyone else to link The Riddler back to Edward Nashton, a forensic accountant. No one would suspect him, no one would know until he chose to reveal it.
But for now he had things that needed doing; the first step of his great plan was to murder the mayor, Don Mitchell Jr, on Halloween night. The death of the city mayor would change everything, and he almost couldn’t wait - but he had to, for he had something he needed to do first.
The director of the old Gotham Orphanage where he’d grown up was in his late fifties now, living comfortably on the outskirts of the city. Edward had done his research: the man had no family and lived alone - he was almost too easy a target. He was not a high profile figure, not like the mayor or the others who would form a part of his plan to bring to truth to the light - it was a personal matter, something he had to do for himself.
The director had been the one who punished him, who never stopped the bullying and abuse inflicted by the other children and staff - but worst of all, he was the one who had signed the documents that took his best friend away, the one who sneered as he refused to give any information or allow him to write a letter.
Perhaps it was selfish - he was doing this purely for himself and not for the city - but he didn’t care. No one could blame him for wanting to kill this man, and no one would miss him.
It was easy to sneak into the old director’s small apartment on the outside of the city; the man had left a window open before going out for dinner, and Edward had to try not to smirk under his mask as he used the fire escape to climb up and slip inside. Now all he had to do was wait.
The plan was simple: he would wait for the ex-director to return, hidden away behind the bedroom door, and then strike when the moment was right. He knew where exactly to strike the skull, how to stage it to look like he’d just fallen and never gotten up. No one would investigate further than what was immediately obvious - the GCPD weren’t clever enough for that, and wouldn’t want to put the work in for someone so meaningless.
As he entered the bedroom to wait, however, it became immediately clear that he wasn’t alone.
He deflected the blow that came his way easily despite his surprise, reaching for the bludgeon he had on his belt; the figure who had attacked him was reeling back, planning their next attack, and he noticed that they were smaller, their face covered by a balaclava, dressed completely in black. He hadn’t planned for an additional person - this was certainly not his target, and the fact they were masked made it obvious that they, like him, certainly weren’t supposed to be there either.
The figure launched again, and Edward grabbed them by the arm; they were either sloppy in their fighting or taken just as aback as he was by his appearance. He hadn’t been planning on killing a second person tonight, but if he had to then he would - it would be sloppy not to. The stranger huffed, trying to break free, and he pulled them closer so that he could manoeuvre them with both of his hands. The eyes behind the mask flashed and-
And he felt his breath catch. He knew those eyes: he’d thought about them every day and night since he was a child.
It couldn’t be.
He let go, and the stranger moved away, panting harshly. “Jesus Christ, what the fuck, dude???”
The voice was familiar - not quite the same, it was slightly older but he recognised the tone, the accent, the way this person spoke. He had never forgotten your voice - he had never forgotten anything about you, even years later.
“Listen, I’m here for someone in particular, I don’t want to hurt anyone else, so if you could just-”
“(Y/N)?” His voice was soft and muffled by the mask.
You stopped speaking, surprised that this person knew your name; you hadn’t really met anyone upon returning to Gotham, keeping to yourself, and even so, you’d thought your mask would provide you anonymity. “Do I know you?”
Now that you weren’t actively fighting this person, you got a good look at them; it was a man, judging by the stature and voice, and he was dressed in a green trench coat with a white question mark painted on the left side. The mask covered their whole face, but you realised now that they were wearing a pair of glasses.
With a jolt, you remembered that Eddie had worn glasses like that. But it couldn’t be him, it couldn’t possibly…
You hesitated for a moment before reaching up and removing your mask; the eyes behind the glasses widened in recognition, and you realised those eyes were green - just like his, the exact same shade.
“Eddie?” You murmured, heart pounding.
For a moment, the masked figure didn’t say anything - and then, slowly, he removed his glasses before reaching up and pulling his mask off.
He had grown up, just as you had, but you knew: this was Eddie, your Eddie. Even though he’d wrapped his head in something, even though his face was older than that of the teenage boy you’d loved, even though it had been years, you knew it was him.
“I…” You felt your throat close up. “Eddie.”
“(Y/N)…” He looked thunderstruck at the sight of you as he replaced the glasses onto his face. “I… Hi.”
Before you could stop yourself, you were throwing your arms around him whilst trying to hold your tears back. “Fuck, Eddie, I’ve been trying to find you! I thought…” You sniffed. “I missed you.”
He was surprised by this, but you felt a tentative hand on your back as he relaxed slightly. “I missed you too.”
You pulled away to look at him, a flurry of emotions running through you; you couldn’t believe it, that after all this time, after all the pain and heart ache of being separated from him, you’d found him when you weren’t even expecting it. Now you were looking at him properly, you could see that this was without a doubt your best friend - there was no mistaking it.
“What are you doing here?” You questioned, head still spinning. “And… why are you dressed like that?”
Eddie opened his mouth and closed it again, not certain on how to answer. “Oh. I’m… well… this is what I do,” He said carefully. “I was… waiting for someone.”
“Oh.”
“And why are you here? And dressed like that?” He asked, rather perplexed.
You hesitated for the second time that evening, not sure of how much to tell him - you didn’t think he would go to the police or turn you in, but you were completely sure of how he’d react to the truth. But then, you thought as you looked at how he was dressed, perhaps he understood more than you thought. “For the same reason as you, I think; I’m here for him.”
You could tell by the way his eyes lit up with understanding that you were right. “We’re both after the same person - to make him pay.”
There were a lot of things the two of you needed to discuss - you hadn’t seen each other for roughly a decade and a half, after all - but you were both aware of where you were, and that you didn’t have time to have that conversation here. Instead, you toyed with your mask before sending the man in front of you a meaningful look.
“How about,” You began slowly. “We work together and take care of this guy, and then maybe we can catch up later?”
Eddie considered this for a moment before slowly nodding and preparing to put his own mask back on. “I think that’s a good plan.”
As it turned out, it was so much easier to do with two.
****
Crap ending be crap lol
May write a follow up to this where they talk and he confesses his feelings, who knows? 😉

"Oh my god he got another one."
read it on AO3 at https://ift.tt/R1UBEe5 by LakeAwen By the time Cass comes around, the Batfamily is starting to notice a pattern. Every time they mention wanting another sibling, a kid shows up within the month just *needing* to be adopted. Coincidence? Or CURSE? This is Gotham, after all. Red Robin raises his voice, shouting across Gotham’s rooftops. “I wish I had-” BlueJay tackles him, and they almost roll off the roof. Black Bat grabs them, yanking them back from the edge, and shakes her head at them. Red Robin manages to drag his brother’s hand away from his mouth, craning his head out of reach. “I wish I had a fun sibling! Like a sister who’s actually-” He’s cut off, grunting as BlueJay shoves him to the roof. “You have fun siblings! You have me! summary: Years ago, Bruce Wayne took a vow in front of the public, in front of you, and in front of God. Later, he took another vow before he set out as Batman, to help Gotham, but now he feels that he might not be able to keep both at the same time.
a/n: I decided to post my fics on tumblr as well because why not. No one ever said there’s anything wrong with preaching to the choir. :) this is the first time I’ve written anything outside of a screenplay in a while and the first time I’ve written x reader since 2013, when I used to write Hetalia x reader. Ideally my writing has in some way shape or form improved and this is better than my middle school era fanfic. This was not edited. Or beta read. Just raw and unfiltered straight from the depths of my mind. some grammatical errors may abound.
Tumblr media
Bruce Wayne is a billionaire and though he may deny it, that’s just the kind of man that can never be satisfied with just one thing. The desire for more runs deep in his veins, even if he doesn’t notice or worse, pretends not to.
For example, Bruce loves you, his darling wife that has stood by him since you first met in your early 20s. A whirlwind romance that led to the perfect life. He loves everything about being the so-called Prince and Princess of Gotham. He feels even luckier that you support his nocturnal endeavors in any way you can, enduring the stress and anxiety in favor of finding small ways to help from behind the scenes.
However, there are things he can’t help. He tells himself that, in the end, he’s only a man, and as all men do he has his weaknesses. He’s no stranger to them most of the time but never before has he given into his temptations like this. God help him but he can’t stop thinking about Selina Kyle.
Every so often he remembers you, which draws attention to the problem with those thoughts and feelings. He tells himself, Bruce Wayne has a wife but Batman? That’s an entirely different ballpark, isn’t it? So he rationalizes. So he lets himself try to have both. After all, if a man like him can’t have it all then where lies the hope for anyone else in Gotham?
So instead of going up to his bedroom where his loving wife waits for him, he pulls up a picture of Selina Kyle and thinks about what could have been if she hadn’t left. He doesn’t feel great about it but as long as he goes up and fucks his wife in the morning he can forgive himself.
But secrets are hard to keep especially from the people that live with you and have access to your computer.
Therefore, while it’s true that you shouldn’t have gone through his computer, it’s also true that Bruce has been distant in the months dealing with the flooding and the Riddler’s crimes. Perhaps that’s why you thought looking through his computer could give you the information needed to help. You didn’t expect that the first thing on the screen to be a video of your husband kissing a woman you had never seen before. It’s from his perspective, filmed with his contacts, but you can see his reflection in her eyes. He looks at her the way he looks at you. How poetic. How nauseating.
You notice he doesn’t turn on his computer like he usually does despite having taken off his contacts, oh how a non-action can become such an indicator of guilt with the right information. He doesn’t say anything, just gives you a chaste kiss on the cheek and takes the water you brought down for him.
“How was the crime-fighting?” You said. It came out weaker than expected, almost a whisper, but in the silence, he still heard it clearly.
“No worse than normal,” he replies, matching your quiet voice.
“No big injuries then?” You need to make sure, he tended to downplay his injuries.
“Just a couple of bruises, nothing major.”
“That’s reassuring,” you mumble under your breath sarcastically. He pretends not to have heard you.
“It’s cold down here, go to bed, I'll be there soon.” His voice is laced with concern that you aren’t convinced is sincere.
You smile anyways. “Promise not to take too long?”
“Promise,” He whispers into your palm before giving it a gentle kiss.
On the way up a part of you thinks you should have said something, gotten angry, or yelled at him. You feel a wave of nausea roll over your body, upset at your weakness. You were angry and you wanted answers so why is it that the second you saw him you let him walk all over you?
You lay in bed and count the minutes, waiting until you can’t anymore, eventually falling asleep without him, and in the morning, waking up to an empty bed.
In the morning you read the newspaper with your coffee. There was a robbery in an art gallery somewhere downtown, another problem for Batman to solve under the cover of night. You don’t think any more of it, after all, this is Gotham.
Selina was back in town and she left little clues for Batman at the scenes of her crimes in order to lead him to her (but only if he really wanted to see her). Just like that, the stars align for him. She tells him she’ll stick around for a couple more weeks that happen to coincide with you leaving for a short business trip in a neighboring city. The wheels turn in his head and he decides to invite her back to his cave. In a strange way, Bruce has opened himself up to trust her, at least a little.
Unbeknownst to him (because he didn’t bother to speak to you in the last couple of days) you had postponed your trip due to unforeseen circumstances.
So you find yourself there, in the Batcave, waiting for him. When you hear the sounds of two vehicles approaching you duck under one of the desks to hide in the darkness, unsure of who he’s with.
It’s a woman. She takes her mask off and you recognize her as the woman from the video. You start to wonder what she’s doing here, seated on Bruce’s computer desk, when she starts to kiss him.
She presses herself up against his body, he leans closer into her touch. He’s wearing the clothes he usually wore when he did reconnaissance, with the addition of his cowl, to continue hiding his identity. She gasps, moans, and whimpers, noises echoing off the walls making you feel suffocated. You poked your head out above the other desk you took refuge behind, exposing yourself to the fluorescent light, and made eye contact with Bruce. He didn’t stop kissing her, nor he didn’t take his hands off of her.
You looked away first, bile rising in your throat making you feel sick. You don’t know what you thought would happen, deep down you hoped that he would have had the decency to tell her to leave.
You didn’t have anywhere to go, anywhere to run away to without causing a scene and potentially revealing his identity. So you laid down on the cold, dirty floor and pretended you were somewhere else to no avail. Christ this woman was loud, with her Oh Batman this and her oh Batman that. How obscene. How ironic that you still didn’t know her name. You think to yourself that he probably isn’t saying it because he knows you’re there. It’s considerate, in a way, although more considerate would be not fucking her in front of you in the first place.
Finally, after what seemed like forever, it’s over. They’re done. You sit up in time to see her get on her motorcycle and leave. Bruce takes off his cowl and you get to see his face. His expression is unreadable as he walks over to you. He towers over you and in the silence, you feel so small.
He offers his hand to help you up, which feels patronizing, so you stand on your own purposefully avoiding his hand.
“I’m going to sleep,” you said, voice coming out hoarse but emotionless. You refused to cry about this in front of him.
He doesn’t say anything, quiet and reserved to a fault, just looked at you get in the elevator and gave a faint nod. A light above him flickers as the computer turns on, work needed to be completed regardless of personal affairs. Amidst his work he briefly considers going up to the shared bedroom but decides against it. That was better in the end, he wouldn’t have found you there anway.

Note
This
AiDeku AU
Shouta is Bruce Wayne/Batman
Izuku is Selina Kyle/Catwoman
Izuku stared at the safe, looking at the very expensive watch inside of it, along with the money and the note requesting a date. He opened his mouth before closing it. His gloved hand slapped to his face before dragging down it as he sighed.
"Are you fucking kidding me?" he asked out loud, snatching the items before stomping out towards the window where he'd broken in. He leapt out of it, leaving the study behind. He slunk through the grounds of the estate, leaving it behind with the only trace of him the open safe.
He made it through the woods surrounding the estate, heading to his pick-uppitched spot where his best friend Uraraka Ochako waited for him in their getaway car, the woman texting her boyfriend Kirishima. Izuku slid into the passenger seat, yanking his mask off. Ochako hummed as she finished her text.
"So, you got the loot?" she asked. Izuku responded by handing her the note. Ochako raised an eyebrow, taking the note and looking at it. Upon reading it, she burst into high pitch laughter, leaning forward to rest her forehead on the wheel. "Oh god!" she cackled. "This guy... Izu, you gotta!"
"What kinda grade-a weirdo does this shit Ochako?!" Izuku demanded. "I broke into his house! I've been doing it since we came here, and all he does is smile dopily at me, offer one of his cats for me to pet and give me more money!"
"Guess he wants to be a sugar daddy," Ochako said between her giggles. "Which... I'd hit it. So I vote you do too." She took a breath, pulling back to finish her giggles.
"See, this is why we broke up. You're crazy," Izuku told her.
"We broke up because Bakugou is a dick," Ochako said, her laughter leaving. Both thieves frowned at the mention of the old member of the crew. Ochako shook her head. "Well, I vote you get some good dick in your life, and apparently Aizawa Shouta is into guys who steal his shit in light catsuits."
"The guy is crazy. I don't let crazy put dick in me and I don't put my dick in crazy." Izuku denied.
"Todoroki Shouto."
"Hey! He wasn't crazy when I dated him!"
"Kaminari Denki."
"Okay, LISTEN-"

"Sho, you're my best friend and I love you. But what the ACTUAL fuck?" Yamada Hizashi asked Aizawa Shouta as the two hung around Shouta's secret lair. Shouta hummed as he sat in the chair he kept in front of the large computer monitors, petting a cat like some sort of super villain from a Bond movie. Which given Shouta was a hero usually made Hizashi laugh.
Seeing his friend sighing over the image of the cat burglar stealing from him though... made Hizashi groan instead.
"Sho, he's a criminal."
"We're dating," Shouta responded.
"This is not how dating works."
"How did you meet your girlfriend again?" Shouta asked Hizashi. The blonde man opened his mouth only to close it. His girlfriend, the former villain he met during a very large crime bust did in fact point out it was sort of how it went.
"We didn't do this!" Hizashi finally settled with. Shouta hummed in answer. "Sho-"
"I'm going to release rumours about the new expensive diamonds Aizawa Industries will showcase soon," Shouta announced. Hizashi finally gave up, burying his face into his hands with a loud groan.
